General Counsel, Starling Bank Limited
Matt Newman is Starling Bank’s General Counsel and Company Secretary.
Matt was a corporate finance partner at Thomas Eggar where he headed up the firm’s Private Equity Team and was a strategic partner on its Financial Services Sector. He acted primarily for financial institutions, including banks, payment services providers, insurers and private equity funds.
Matt’s long term client, Anne Boden had founded Starling in 2014 to start a disruptor bank; she asked Matt to join Starling in the autumn of 2015. Having spent almost 20 years in private practice, he left to join Starling in December 2015 as General Counsel and Company Secretary.
At Starling, Matt oversees all legal matters, including corporate governance, intellectual property, data and privacy, IT and commercial matters, employment and litigation and the preparation and negotiation of commercial agreements.
Starling gained its banking licence in July 2016 and is due to launch to the public very soon.
